Learning From My Kids

One of the coolest things about being a parent is the opportunity to learn from our children. God has used motherhood to teach and refine me a million times over.

Like this kid. She’s turning six this week. Already, she teaches me.

One of the things I admire most about her is her unbridled zeal for life. She’ss epitomizes joy. She lives and loves ferociously, with reckless abandon. She is truly a free spirit: Always dancing, always singing. We affectionately discern she would be most at home picking flowers and chasing butterflies, frolicking barefoot through a forest.

I love that she is already such a vibrant, unique individual, oblivious to conformity. This girl goes to the beat of her own drum. She is true to herself and confident, seldom surveying her peers for acceptance or approval. Still, she is compassionate, kind and inclusive to those around her.

I have much to learn from her and I am thankful for her joyful influence in our family. She will be a terrific Big Sister.

“Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, Lord.” -Psalm 89:15

(The following video provides a perfect illustration of our Joyful Girl, contentedly passing the time in a local bike shop by dancing unabashedly to the elusive soundtrack of her own imagination.)
