What to Read Wednesday: First Books

“In the great green room there was a telephone, and a red balloon, and a picture of a cow jumping over the moon…”

There are a few classic books that I’ve read aloud so many times that I can now recite them verbatim without looking.

“The sun did not shine, it was too wet to play, so we sat in the house all that cold, cold, wet day…”

Sacred nursery tales that the kids requested over and over, frayed pages and worn out spines.

“By the light of the moon, a little egg lay on a leaf…”

I’m grateful my kids have always delighted in story-time, and I’m fairly certain that they also now have several volumes memorized themselves.

“Stomp your feet and clap your hands, everybody do a barnyard dance…”

When pregnant with my second girl in 26 months, Much Older Sister sought to bless me with an unconventional baby shower. Seeing as how I’ve always been a bookworm, and since I already had mountains of pink onesies, she opted instead for a book-themed baby shower to celebrate our precious bundle. Family gathered to stock the baby’s bookshelves with timeless classics– each guest encouraged to bring and read aloud from their own favorite childhood prose.

“Roly-poly, pell-mell, tumble-bumble…”

Timeless favorites have become treasured family heirlooms carefully tucked away and preserved for future generations, our kiddos are now bookworms in their own right.
