Folk tale: A story originating in popular culture, typically passed on by word of mouth.

Everybody loves a classic fable or folk tale, and every culture in the world’s got ’em. Though I’ve inadvertently memorized everything from Goodnight Moon to The Cat in the Hat, this week’s What to Read Wednesday is featuring folklore that likely any American can recite from memory, as part of our collective oral tradition.

Here are a few of our family favorites, including one from our son’s native China:
